New Law on Advance Medical Directives & Medical Aid in Dying

Access for residents of Quebec

This session is intended for Caregivers, Patients, Professionals

In December 2015, Quebec introduced a new health care law.

This talk in French will address two parts of this new law:

  • advance medical directives
  • medical aid in dying

Advance directives let you indicate in advance your wishes about certain kinds of medical treatment in certain situations. You’ll learn how to make them and when they can be used.

Medical aid in dying means giving medication to accelerate a person’s death, at the request of that person. The purpose is to relieve severe suffering. You’ll learn about who can make this kind of request and the duties of doctors.

The speaker is Sahra Chebli, a lawyer at Éducaloi. She will be accompanied by Sarah Dougherty, a lawyer at Éducaloi who will be able to answer questions in English.

Éducaloi is a non-profit organization that explains the law to Quebecers in easy-to-understand language.

  1. Sahra develops and creates educational tools and judicial information for a vast audience in different sectors of the law in different formats. She analyzes and ensures the validity of the judicial content, notably through research work and verifying sources. After two Master's degrees in public law and private law in France et after obtaining an attestation equivalent to a diploma at the University of Montreal, Sahra integrated into the Bar Admission in 2012. She become a member of the Quebec Bar Association in 2014 and went on to work as a lawyer at a well-known law firm specializing in class action suits at Sylvestre Fafard Painchaud.
